Inki is a multi-instrumentalist and DJ crafting immersive “sacred bass” journeys—blending global folk traditions, live instrumentation, and deep electronic sound into powerful, intentional dancefloor experiences. Rooted in years of work with indigenous communities in the Amazon and Andes, his sets bridge ancient lineage with modern bass culture.
Biography
Inki grew up along the Susquehanna River, where music first took hold through traditional instruments. He spent a decade immersed in trumpet—playing swing, marches, and jazz—but by 2001, the structure of formal music no longer aligned with his creative instincts, and he walked away. That departure became a turning point. Drawn into Native American culture and ritual, Inki began exploring a deeper relationship with sound—one rooted in connection, presence, and lived experience. Music returned not as performance, but as practice.
In 2009, the discovery of the integral hang opened a new path. Its resonant harmonics offered an intuitive and expressive language that shaped the early evolution of his sound. While the instrument played a pivotal role in his journey, Inki has since moved away from the integral hang as a primary focus, allowing his musical direction to expand more freely. Travels through India and Thailand in 2012–13 deepened this evolution. Playing in the streets of India, Inki experienced how music could dissolve barriers--bringing people together in shared moments of stillness, joy, and connection. It was here that his work began to take on a more intentional and transformative edge.
Since 2015, ongoing journeys into the Amazon jungle and the Andes mountains have become a defining influence on his sound. Spending extended time living with and learning from indigenous communities in remote regions, Inki has developed a deep respect for the essence of traditional folk music—its rawness, its purpose, and its connection to land and lineage. These experiences continue to shape his work, informing a sound that bridges ancient traditions with contemporary electronic music. Back in Aotearoa, he has woven these influences into performance and collaboration, working with artists such as Dunedin’s fire and dance collective the Firebugs, and sharing stages with Matiu Te Huki and Karen Hunter. He has also toured in collaboration with British roots/reggae artist Bob Hillary.
